Opinion: Reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank of the United States

San Antonio (July 21, 2014) – The International Trade Center, an SBDC at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Institute of Economic Development, would like to announce our support of the Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im).

Ex-Im is a critical resource for small and medium sized US businesses that are making deals in international markets. We have been an Ex-Im City/State Partner since 2009, and in 2013 were honored as the City/State Partner of the Year. We value the services and mission of this 80-year old institution and have great expectations for the opportunities that they bring to our clients.

Every 2 years congress has to reauthorize the banks’ charter for it to continue to exist, and help American businesses compete in the global market. For 80 years congress has done this with bipartisan support.

We encourage our clients, stakeholders, and partners to support the Ex-Im Bank reauthorization in congress. Please take a moment now to contact your representatives to ask that they support this important tool for small business in the US. http://www.house.gov/representatives/find/.

Ex-Im supports American exporters by helping to level the field for business, in particular those that would not otherwise benefit from private-sector loans and banking services. Moreover, the fees and interest that the bank charges have created a profit generating mechanism for the American taxpayers.

By the numbers it is also clear to us that Ex-Im is creating economic impact that matters. Over the last 5 years, Ex-Im Bank has supported 1.2 million American jobs, generated $2 billion for U.S. taxpayers at zero net cost, and financed exports with a value of more than $188 billion.
