Julio Garcia de las Mestas

Sr. International Business Consultant

Julio is currently a Sr. International Business Consultant at the International Trade Center and helps the expansion of the SBDC Program to Latin America. Under this position he also provides trade-consulting assistance to small and medium size businesses interested in exploring international business opportunities.

Julio earned a bachelor’s degree in Merchant Marine from the University of A Coruña and worked as deck officer on board 4 vessels of the Spanish Merchant Marine fleet. During this period he studied different fields of global trade obtaining a degree in International Shipping and received his license as a Freight Forwarder, Transport Agent and Wholesaler.

In 1994 he was awarded a scholarship to support activities of the Commercial Service of the Spanish Embassy to Mexico. Here he performed in-depth market research and explored export market opportunities and assisted Spanish businesses to enter the Mexican market. He later become manager of TFinis, a Mexican producer of packed nuts, where he helped the company expand sales to the entire Mexican market. He also developed the commercial strategy for different small businesses including international positioning of these firms and provided counseling assistance for its operations.

Julio later worked at Universidad Veracruzana (UV) in Veracruz, Mexico, where he was in charge of its Industrial Extension Program. Here he developed and programmed activities involving the university and businesses all over the state of Veracruz. He also wrote several funding proposals to various federal and international institutions and obtained funding for the design of the UV SBDC and also promoted and helped create the Mexican Association of Small Business Development Centers (AMCDPE). He later coordinated the operation of the AMCDPE, developed management training for over 1,200 consultants and directors of this network and supported its growth to more than 100 centers along Mexico.

Julio is a Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) with more than 15 years experience helping small businesses positioning their products and services in the global market. He is a believer that promoting business success is a way to tackle social inequalities and promote business opportunities available to entrepreneurs in the Americas.
